ARRL FIELD DAY
2010 The club operated field day at the home of Sammy and Patsy Neal again this year and what a great event it was. The club hosted about 50 visitors this year including about 18 Kids that we helped make their first contact on the radio. The contest portion of field day was headed up by Jeff K5MV, providing CW work on the bands was Larry K5EGA and Jeff. The phone contacts were provided by Dave N5AK, Al N5WWS, Stu K5STU, and Ron ND5T. The Club upheld its tradition as the Best Fed Club in the Nation with all the fixen's from Clyde N5IF, Stephanie KB5WXM, Brenda KB5RSH, and Kelly KF5DDS. All the kids took home a brochure showing their contact and all the members took home some found memories
The other Shark members who contributed to success of this field day including set up, talking with visitors, tear down, and helping with everything that is involved in putting field day togeather.
Fred N5HHD
Cheryl N5HHG
Jimmy W5JRH
Jesse KB5YC
Marcella N5WAK Thanks to all who contributed to bring this Field Day togeather
2009 The club operated from Sammy Neal (N5AF) place near Dolan. Everyone had a wonderful time. The activities were coordinated by Clyde (N5IF). The club hosted an information booth ran by Margaret (NK5F). As always we had really good food that was prepared by Stephanie (KB5WXM), Brenda (KB5RSH), and Beth (KE5AJO). Thanks to Jeff (K5MV) and his friends we were able to make a lot of contacts on CW. Beth (KE5AJO), Brenda (KB5RSH), and Stu (K5STU) stayed up all night working the radio to increase our contacts.
The Field Day results for 2009 are in and our club ended up with the top 1A class for Texas. We ranked 30th overall in the nation in 1A class with a total of 173 entries. This is a great accomplishment for our club and everyone involved should be very proud. See the December QST for more info or visit www.arrl.org
The Ghost of WPA Lives On !
Many of us used to listen to the HF maritime coastal stations traffic callups for code practice when we were trying for that " unreachable " 13 and 20 WPM level. Check out this website, but especially the " HF CQ Marker " site where there are recordings of many of these now silent stations, including WPA in Port Arthur, Texas which David Evans K5SOR & I visited when it was in full operation.
I returned to it later, after it was silent. Max Busick W5GJ of Madison Electronics bought the enventory of the station, tore it down and sold it for parts at his store(s) in Houston. He said I could have anything else that was left, so I drove to WPA's building on Texas Highway 87, about 2 miles South of the then Gulf Refinery in Port Arthur, on the way to Sabine Pass, Texas and the pickings were slim. I did manage to get the shelf that the individual CW operators stored their bugs on when off duty, and I still have it.
There were a dozen or so creosote poles left, but they were just too far out in the salt marsh to recover economically. The 500 KHz tower had been dismantled, and stacked on the ground ( salt marsh just feet from the InterCoastal Canal ) and it had been exposed to the salt too long.
SKYWARN
Jump on the 146.900 repeater when storms are in the area. The shark club has started the Skywarn net and participation has been excellent so far, Keep up the good work. Check out the Skywarn page for more info and radar maps
